With a huge heart for South Africa and the upliftment of local communities, The Icon's Journey Marathon is everything that Rooted Websites applaudes. When founder and multiple ultra marathon competitor, Prince Bandile Vulithuba Sangoni, (read his story here) first approached us to design a website to give a visible voice to his vision, this initiative captured our hearts.
Since our initial website design in 2019, Rooted Websites and Design has designed and hosted 2 virtual marathons and in 2021 launched the Iconic App, an easy to use app using Spaces by Wix. This App gives The Icon's Journey Marathon the platform for it's participants to create community, join groups and sport challenges.
The Icon's Journey Marathon (a proud member of Proudly South African) is an annual multi-sporting event running in South Africa and the United Kingdom, that creates icons out of ordinary men and women as well as enhances an deep pride in South Africa and her beautiful people.
The Icon’s Journey Marathon vision was inspired by President Nelson Mandela’s life journey of growing up in the rural villages of the former Transkei homeland to becoming a Global Icon.
With a strong arm of promoting sport for social change, this talented team is making an impact on those around them.
As the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world in 2020, this physical challenge changed it's direction and hosted a virtual marathon ensuring that the communities they support and uplift were not neglected in time that many were in need. Rooted Websites was enlisted to make this quick change to the event, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. With the pandemic far from over, the organising committee opted to once again cancel the physical event but run with a virtual event which we are privileged to once again to host.
Trust me when I say this is an initiative that is going places! If you are a runner, a cyclist or just a beautiful South African who wants to be involved in uplifting this incredible country of ours, then check them out!
The virtual challenge takes place in July 2021 and entries are open now.
